Pet Virkon - Our Recommended Professional Disinfectant for Every Pet Home

We recommend that pet households periodically spray all furnishings with a veterinary disinfectant, not least to kill spores that can hide in the home and cause havoc with animals' coats and skin; longhaired pets especially can really suffer. A healthy pet does not itch and scratch on a regular basis. If I see my pets scratch once a week that is a lot! I.e. it's not normal, and there's something going on, if you see your animals scratching any more regularly than 'once in a blue moon'. Clumps of fur around the property are a tell tale sign too. Assuming you keep up your regular flea treatments, the environment is a very likely culprit of pet itching/skin issues. To address environmental problems, you need a veterinary quality product.

Many owners do not realise the ongoing harm caused to their pets by the inappropriate use of cleaning products. Even 'professional' rescues, breeders and catteries sometimes use general disinfectants when they need something less toxic to pets, and more effective against viruses, bacteria and fungal spores.

We recommend VIRKON, since it is not only wonderfully pet safe, but is HIGHLY EFFECTIVE against a plethora of cat and dog viruses, fungi and bacteria, which WOULD NOT be killed by any regular household cleaners.

You can wash kennels and beds with Virkon, and make these immediately available to the pet.

Even better, it is very user friendly, easy to mix and has a lovely but not strong scent. Guests will not recognise that you have used a disinfectant and it is not flowery.

My top tip for using Virkon in the home, and having a really effective application, is that you buy a garden spray of the type used for weedkiller. This would hold something like 5 litres, and has a pump action. A small trigger spray (a plant spray) will be too small and not achieve much compared to the 5l spray, which makes light work of a large room very quickly. Do not be afraid to mix up 5litres and use it all. Leave each surface just slightly damp.

If your pets were scratching before you used this product, you should soon notice a difference. But as before, ensure your house is also sprayed for fleas regularly a household spray from the vet is most recommended) and ensure your pets get a monthly spot-on flea treatment too, and this will ensure that any itches are not caused by fleas (which of course are not addressed by using Virkon, since it isn't an insecticidal).

If you have ANY of the following situations in your pet household, you will definitely benefit from keeping some Pet Virkon at home, and spraying around every couple of months. Apply Virkon in a fine spray to curtains, carpets, sofas, pet beds and blankets, doormats, and any other soft areas. Equally it should be sprayed in your household's nooks and crannies - skirtings, walls, corners, below furniture, and so on.

Please do not think of Virkon as just another household cleaner. It is a highly specialist, efficient product which can make a massive difference to your animals' wellbeing, and it is not only safe but also very pleasant to mix and use, with no noxious fumes. Virkon is easily mixed with water. This small tub of 500g mixes to 50 litres, which should last a year or more of regular cleaning. The small 500g size is on the left in the photo below. We can obtain the larger size on request, please ask for details; however, this larger size is only for visitors to the rescue since it is quite heavy to post.

Training Pads ('highly recommended' by the Rescue for ALL CATS who mess in the home)

By Cheryl-Anne Jenkinson, Rescue Owner/Manager:

For many years I have been giving advice and assistance to owners of Persian and pedigree cats who are messing in the home. This is the most common Persian behavioural problem.

Some Persians mess so habitually that they are either rehomed by desperate owners or are put to sleep. Many owners exacerbate the problem by becoming short tempered with their cats.

Please try training pads for your cats, because results are excellent. I have never come across any cat who has failed to transfer from household messing in inappropriate places, to these pads, when used routinely and consistently by the owner. Of course we do not suggest that this is an 'ideal' solution - the absolute ideal is to get the cat back to using a litter tray. However, the simple use of pads is a real advance and break-through in addressing what is a particularly difficult behavioural issue.

You can buy these types of pads in many pet stores but PLEASE if you are intending using this tip for 'messing' problems in Persian cats specifically, order ONLY from us because we will include for you our detailed advice and instructions sheet. I have been developing toilet training techniques with Persian cats for the last 7 years, and these pads, together with helpful instructions and patience, are the key to resolution. Pads alone will not achieve resolution - you also need the knowledge.

The factsheet we provide with the pads will also tell you how to recognise the difference between distress patterns of messing, and those caused by other issues. Failure to recognise the cause (of wetting especially), can ultimately lead to the death of an animal, as some potentially serious conditions can also cause temporary wetting in the home. The booklet also tells you what causes cats to mess and what you can do to make your pet happier.

Many cats who DO simply have a behavioural problem and who begin using the pads, WILL revert to a litter tray after a time, and eventually you may be able to stop using the pads, but please don't take the pads simply in the expectation that your cat will be 'cured'.

Cats who start using pads will very probably cease messing on carpets and furnishings as long as these pads are kept constantly refreshed, by the owner. So the outcome is extremely good and can prevent rehoming or worse.

In addition, if your cat doesn't have a messing problem, pads can still be of help in maintaining healthy litter tray habits. Provide a large and deep tray with a few pads in at a time. (However, we still recommend you offer litter aswell in a separate tray, as cats naturally like to scratch and dig before they toilet). Kittens, from birth up to weaning and beyond, will also love pads, and even tiny kittens learn to use them very easily indeed. As any breeder will recognise, this can make the difference between miserable, cold and sick kittens paddling in urine (before they learn to toilet or can walk properly!) and kittens who are dry, warm, happy, healthy and sweet smelling.

NB: If you have a problem with cats wetting in the home, please also read the section on Training Pads, at the top of this page. The detector light and training pads go hand in hand as a great solution to inappropriate toileting in cats.

Information Leaflet - Inappropriate Toileting in Cats

A detailed 8-page factsheet specially prepared by Cheryl-Anne Jenkinson, Manager of Chapelhouse Persian Rescue, and highly experienced in dealing with 'phantom piddlers'!

This fact sheet addresses what is one of the most common problems in Persian cats, inappropriate urination and defecation around the home. The leaflet is specifically designed for use in conjunction with a premium brand of training pads, but you may equally find the leaflet useful on its own if you have cats who mess in the home. In addition to telling you how to address the issues, the factsheet will also help you identify the causes and to determine when there is an underlying problem requiring veterinary intervention.

If you buy this leaflet on its own, you will be sent only the leaflet by return e-mail and you will need to obtain your pack of training pads from your own pet store. Do not use a cheap brand of training pads!

If, however, you would rather order from us our preferred brand of pads together with the leaflet, see the above section and place your order there.
