Behavioural Factsheets
All of the information in our factsheets is written by Cheryl-Anne Jenkinson, the Rescue's Manager. It draws on her extensive experience with rescued and traumatised Persian cats, but advice will also apply to other breeds exhibiting the same behaviours. If you need one-to-one in depth help, either with toileting issues or other Persian care or behaviour problems, see the 'Advice' section by clicking the link above; you can, alternatively, buy into those specialist help packages.

FACTSHEET - Buying a Persian Kitten from a Breeder
Many people write to us asking for help in buying a healthy Persian kitten from a reputable breeder. Most animal rescues do not have a lot of contact with breeders and we are no different, so we cannot provide you with a breeder list - you will have to locate these yourselves.
However, what we can do, and what we know we do well, is advise you in detail about how to identify a good and ethical breeder, which publications and online resources to use in locating these, how to spot 'dodgy' breeders who need to be avoided at all costs, and how to select a healthy kitten. Furthermore, we give you lots of advice on being prepared for a Persian kitten, and how to deal with early problems.
In fact, using our advice guide you should manage to avoid the common problems associated with poor kitten selection practices, and end up with a happy and healthy new addition.
Before you set out to buy a Persian kitten without our advice guide, first ask yourself do you know the answers to these questions:
- how will I know that the breeder is following ethical breeding practices?
- what vet checks and treatments should the breeder have carried out on the kitten, before he/she is released to me?
- at what age should a Persian kitten be released to its new home?
- what questions should a good breeder ask me, to prove MYSELF as a suitable new owner of this special breed?
- what are the warning signs of a sickly kitten?
- if I visit a breeder just after the litter is born, can I handle the kittens?
- if I visit a breeder just after kittens are born, what precautions should the breeder take, to ensure I do not pose a risk to the litter?
- what age should the kittens be, before I am able to place a reservation fee or deposit on the one I would like?
- should a breeder be keeping the kittens and their mother in a pen or cage, or should they be free roaming in the house?
- how much should I be prepared to pay for a Persian kitten?
- should the breeder allow me to take a kitten with the intention to breed from it myself?
- what products should I have at home, for the new kitten?
- is it all right to take just one kitten or should I have two?
These are just some of the questions you should know the answers to. Don't know? Then don't buy a kitten or visit breeders til you have read our guide. A small purchase now could save you much heartache and expense.

FACTSHEET - Adopting a Rescued Persian Cat
We are 'the' definitive source of care advice on rescued Persian cats. Our Manager Cheryl-Anne has been advising vets and the public on dealing with the various health and behavioural problems of rescued Persian cats, for more than a decade.
There are in fact a great many problems and issues in rescuing a cat of this breed, but there are also many commensurate rewards. It is NOT like taking on 'any other cat' and this is why breed-specific advice is helpful. Many issues that Persians present, will not apply to other breeds, so when you take on a rescued Persian it will assist you if you are 'clued up' beforehand.
Our 10-page guide has been drafted using all of our experience in rescuing and rehoming. In this booklet we are able to advise you on key issues that will affect your new addition's health and behaviour, such as:
- where to obtain a rescued Persian cat;
- questions to ask when obtaining a Persian cat from a Rescue Centre or other home;
- his/her likely past, and how differing past experiences and home types will affect how your new pet settles - we give examples of past traumas a pet may have experienced, and how these may carry forward into the pet's new life with you, in his/her behaviour;
- how you can modify your behaviour to best ensure that you do not repeat the mistakes of his/her last home, and therefore ensure you do not perpetuate any behavioural issues;
- dietary needs - considering what 'the cat likes' versus what 'the cat needs' as a special breed, and how to alter an animal's feeds by lifestage and known past history;
- identifying and addressing common behavioural issues in rescued Persian cats;
- identifying and addressing common health issues in rescued Persian cats;
- creating an appropriate environment for a rescued Persian - what to do to ensure you have the right home for a Persian, and if so, how to make that home most suited to a new Persian cat, thereby lessening the risk of behavioural issues in the early days;
- identifying and overcoming fear factors - creating a calm home;
- what to expect as a new rescued cat settles in, and in his first year of stay with you - depending on lifestage;
- how to choose the rescued cat who will best suit your home, lifestyle, family members and other animals;
- costs of keeping a Persian cat, including how to choose a good pet insurance package;
- when to consult a vet.
